The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program consists of a minimum of four-and-a-half-year academic course followed by one year of compulsory rotating internship. The core curriculum for the MBBS program shall be composed of following pre-clinical and clinical departments (Human Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology and Pharmacology, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Anaesthesiology, Radiology, General Practice and Emergency and Dental Surgery.
A Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (Latin: Medicine Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgical; MBBS, also abbreviated as BM BS, MB ChB, MB Bach, or MB BChir) is a medical degree granted by medical schools or universities in countries that adhere to the United Kingdom’s higher education tradition. Despite the historical distinction in nomenclature, these degrees are typically combined and conferred together. This degree is usually awarded as an undergraduate degree, but it can also be awarded at graduate-level medical institutions. The typical duration for completion is five to six years.
MCOMS provides four and half years MBBS Degree Program in Preclinical and Clinical Sciences Programs. The four-and-a-half years MBBS course is divided into 9 semesters of 6 months each. On successful completion of the course, students will undergo one-year compulsory rotatory residential internship.
The four and half years of the MBBS program is divided into nine semesters, each of which is of six months duration. The first four semesters are devoted to the study of Pre-clinical Sciences. Disciplines of Pre-clinical Sciences are Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology and Community Medicine. The students are also introduced to clinical knowledge and skills with a subject of Introduction to Clinical Medicine.
The teaching learning experiences in the Community Medicine is from first through the seventh semester.
The Clinical Science subjects are taught from fifth to ninth semesters. The teaching learning experience in Forensic Medicine, Otorhinolaryngology and Ophthalmology are done in sixth and seventh semesters. The subjects of Medicine and allied subjects, Surgery and allied subjects, obstetrics & Gynecology and Pediatrics are taught from fifth to ninth semesters.
The fundamental purpose of medical education is to produce high quality medical practitioners who are willing and able to meet the existing and emerging challenges of the national health care system. In brief, the main objective of MBBS program in Nepal is to develop a holistic approach to the practice of modern medicine. advance one’s own knowledge and skills through higher education via continuing medical education programs and research.
MBBS CURRICULUM-PRECLINICAL SCIENCES (SEMESTERS I-IV):
- The first & second years of instruction cover integrated Preclinical Sciences subjects, Community Medicine, Introduction to Clinical Medicine, and Medical Informatics.
- Preclinical Sciences program include Anatomy, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pathology, Pharmacology & Physiology. These subjects are taught in an integrated manner & are incorporated into Community Medicine and Introduction to Clinical Medicine. Students gain clinical knowledge & problem-solving skills. Medical Informatics is integrated to provide computer expertise relevant to medical education.
- At the end of the first year & the second year, University examinations are conducted on each of the above subjects. A student must pass all subjects of the Pre-clinical Sciences Program within three years from the date of admission & second year within four years from the date of admission.
- The student is compulsorily required to pass all subjects of Preclinical Sciences Program to be promoted to the Clinical Sciences Program (Semester V).
CLINICAL SCIENCES (SEMESTER V-IX):
- Clinical Sciences Program include subjects of Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, Ophthalmology (EYE), Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), Medicine & Allied Subjects (Psychiatry, Dermatology, Radiology, Emergency Medicine & more), Surgery & Allied Subjects (Orthopedics, Anesthesiology & more), Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, and other
allied medical and surgical specialties & subspecialties. - The third-year MBBS University examinations in Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, Ophthalmology & Otorhinolaryngology are held at the end of the seventh semester. The student cannot be admitted to the ninth semester until he/she passes all four subjects. At the end of nineth semesters, the Final MBBS University examinations of Medicine and Allied, Surgery & Allied, Obstetrics & Gynaecology & Pediatric subjects are held. Clinical training is conducted at Manipal Teaching Hospital and associated local hospitals.
- MCOMS has reached out to people through its community health program initiatives, wherein a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, intern doctors, students, and allied health workers organize camps in rural areas. Interaction with the community is well established through regular field trips and adoption of local families.
The teaching activities in Preclinical Sciences Program include:

The PhD curriculum will be highly customized based on the students’ background and needs. Specific courses and milestones will be developed in partnership with the student’s advisor and PhD Program Director.

Relevant fields include medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, nursing, ancillary clinical sciences, public health, librarianship, biomedical science, bioengineering and pharmaceutical sciences, and computer and information science. An undergraduate minor or major in information or computer science is highly desirable.
