Message

Quality and quantity of Medical Education, Research, and Publications have all changed tremendously during my tenure so far. My career is coming to an end in about 2 years. Standards and practice of Medicine, especially Community Medicine, have undergone a sea change during the last 40-odd years. Nepalese students are more sincere and hardworking than their Indian counterparts. India is starting many medical colleges rapidly. It already has 750 medical colleges. There is an acute shortage of Medical Teachers in India. We have 20 medical colleges in Nepal. My advice is not to open more medical colleges rapidly in Nepal. The population of Nepal is now stagnating at 3 crores. Consolidate the existing medical colleges first. Provide incentives free seats, salary, allowances etc., to do post-graduation, not only in basic sciences like Anatomy, Physiology etc., but also in clinical subjects, if there is shortage of specialists.
